Executive Board of Directors

• Organize and oversee the annual graduate creative and research symposium.
• Serve as a liaison between the GSC and university offices that offer professional development workshops and skill-building opportunities for graduate students. This would include, but is not limited to, the career center, the speaking center, Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), Academic Innovation Group (AIG), the Graduate School’s Launch-and-Learn series, etc.
• Advocate for graduate student access to professional certifications, paid internships, and interdisciplinary collaborations.

• Plan and coordinate social events, wellness activities, and networking opportunities to foster a stronger graduate student community. This could include recreational programs such as outdoor excursions, game nights, and cultural celebrations, etc.
• Work with campus health and wellness services to promote mental health initiatives specific to graduate students. This could include but is not limited to stress-relief events and workshops on dealing with toxic supervisors, etc.
• Ensure graduate social events are inclusive and accessible to all.

• Work with university housing offices to advocate for affordable and accessible housing options for graduate students.
• Organize workshops and informational sessions on housing options, housing rights, tenant responsibility, and other things graduate students need to know about being tenants.
• Create programs that foster cross-cultural dialogue, inclusion, and community-building among international and domestic graduate students.
• Partner with cultural organizations and graduate student groups to host events that celebrate UM’s diversity, global traditions, and international student experiences on campus.

• Represent the interests of graduate students who are parents or caregivers, advocating for resources for dependents such as childcare and affordable healthcare, clear guidance for excused class absences for caregivers, and other initiatives dedicated to graduate students with caregiving responsibilities.
• Work with university administrators and the graduate school to improve access to affordable childcare services and family-friendly campus spaces.
• Develop support networks and peer groups for student caregivers to share resources and experiences.
• Organize informational sessions on managing academic and caregiving responsibilities as graduate students.

• Develop and maintain connections between the GSC and the office of alumni.
• Collaborate with the UM alumni association to organize graduate alumni panels, career talks, and social mixers, providing current graduate students with opportunities to cultivate professional connections.
• Work with the campus deans and the graduate arm of the alumni association to create additional research and conference funding for current graduate students.
